DVD OF RICMASTEN HOUSE CONCERTS

........Only now have I discovered that the Genie got out of the bottle and that his name is Bill.  To date we have done 51 gatherings of the "Palo Colorado Monthly Neighborhood Poetry Reading To Keep Ric Masten Alive Society" and Bill Wenner has been to all of them pinning a microphone on me and telling me to say something and then giving me the thumbs up. He then disappears behind his digital video gadget and I soon forget he is there in the corner keeping me in focus.  Then last week Catherine invited Billie Barbara and me to their house, about a five minute walk from ours — for a surprise she squealed.  But Catherine is one who can't keep a secret very well so before we arrived she let the cat out of the bag telling us that Bill had made an hour DVD out of six of the monthly readings.
........Now, I hate to listen or look at myself in performance and had planned to tell Bill that "I loved it!" even though I hated it.  But when I saw the incredible sensitive job he had done, and considered the immense amount of time he had put in to this project — catching the magic of these special events I now have to admit that Cecil B. De Mill married a woman named Catherine and lives a stones throw from  our house.  Thanks Bill!

I KNOW IT ISN'T FUNNY BUT...
I LOVE TO MAKE YOU LAUGH

Here is a book full of what Fritz Perls, the father of gestalt psychology, would call "aha's"-those insightful flashes that give us a fresh way of surfacing things we didn't know we knew. This collection of down-to-earth, anti-esoteric writing enables us to realize that feelings, often seemingly so personal, unique, petty and offensive, are common to us all-the very substance of human nature. These p observations can correct the distorted view we have of our personal lives and help us gain a greater understanding of-and respect for-everyone, including ourselves. And best of all, Ric Masten has coated the pill with a unique and uproarious sense of humor. Published 1991.

RIC MASTEN SPEAKING

New readers and long time fans and friends of Ric Masten will find delight in this special selection of poems compiled by Sandra Martz of Papier-Mache Press. Exploring the duality of Ric Masten, the man, and Ric Masten, the poet, this collection demonstrates his strength as both a "speaking poet" and a "printing press poet." The autobiographical nature of much of his material combined with the insightful photography of social gerontologist Marianne Gontarz results in a warm, sensitive and entertaining look at the life and work of an extraordinary man. Contains 21 photographs and 65 poems, including the all time favorite, "Water Spots." Published 1990.

STARK NAKED

......This collection comes in two distinct parts. The first section is comprised of material written in the poets younger years. Years spent looking out at the troubled world around him. The mood expressed here is one of social concern, cynicism and outrage, and yet at the same time the poems are tempered by the poets marvelous sense of humor and questioning rather than accusing attitude.
......In the second section Masten looks inward and speaks about more personal subjects, taking perspectives different from his earlier work. Older now we find him focusing on the mid-life crisis, and in general delivering a funny/touching play by play account of how the game is going in the second half.
......In both sections we are treated to improbable but incredibly apt images, Middle-aged husbands become comical old roosters,. Sanity is defined as Van Gogh clerking in a shoe store. Blase sophistication becomes a creeping, disfiguring disease.

VOICE OF THE HIVE

....."Ric Masten is much more than a poet. He is a prophet.. Someone who can listen to what we are all saying, rephrase it, and then say it back to us in such a way that we can learn from our selves." -- Jusuit Priest, XAVIER UNIVERSITY

.....Now in its fourth printing, VOICE OF THE HIVE is split into three sections. Part 1 includes material with philosophic and religious overtones. In Part 2 we find work with an interpersonal and psychological slant, after which the book concludes with a section entitled THE AUTHOR where Masten writes about creating and performing his "speaking poems".
.....
In the preface, Jack Kisling, a well-known columnist for the Denver Post, gives us a humorous sketch of the poet's background, as well as setting the tempo for the book.
.....Also included -- the music for six of the author's songs. First published in 1978.
