The Minister:

.......Ric Masten, the internationally known Big Sur poet/folk-singer (Click HERE) is also an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister. Semi-retired and no longer spending as much time on the road, he is now available locally in the Big Sur area to be what he terms a "Master of Ceremonies." Over the years the marriage ceremony has become a sort of "forte" of Ric's - something he wholly enjoys doing.

The Ceremony:

.......In a departure from the traditional wedding statement, Masten uses the natural beauty of this glorious coastal area as illustration and text. He has performed scores of weddings over the years but only one was held indoors, and "once was enough," he says. "The traditional sit-down church wedding is just not my style." He strives to create a non-doctrinal affirmation that is spiritual rather than religious. His approach is casual and full of fun, involving friends and family as much as possible. An example of this is his relaxing advice to the nervous couple just before beginning the ceremony, "Let us pray that something goes wrong so that you will have great stories to tell later."

The Robe:

.......When Ric was ordained in the early seventies, his daughter made him a "Marrying Robe" out of old army blankets. It was the time of the Flower Child, and in order to enliven the olive drab material, Ric asked the first couple he married to think of something that symbolized their relationship and to embroider it on the robe. Tradition having been established, every couple since then has embroidered (if time permits) or appliqueed something prepared beforehand onto the robe - a vestment that becomes more and more colorful with each wedding.

The Prenuptial Meeting:

.......Ric requires an in-person meeting with the couple sometime before the actual event. (This will entail a visit to Ric's Big Sur home, an inspiring occasion in itself.) Click for a look at Ric's Big Sur Home. The meeting can be in the morning on the day of the wedding, if need be, but Ric considers this get-together to be essential. During the visit he will give the couple the robe to work on, and although much of the ceremonial fine-tuning can be done beforehand on the phone, Ric does feel it is imperative that there be a time to get to know the future bride and groom and for them to get a sense of him as well. He really doesn't want to be part of a simple "Justice of the Peace Whiz-Bang Affair."

The Documents:
.......The couple must take care of the marriage license beforehand and have it with them to be signed after the ceremony.

The Fee:
.......$300 (gratuities gratefully accepted)

.......Ric Masten will only schedule one wedding ceremony per day. First come, first serve... So if he is unavailable or if you would prefer something different than the way Ric officiates (described above). Ric's good friend and Palo Colorado neighbor is also a retired Unitarian minister, who will help the couple create a ceremony in keeping with Big Sur settings and traditions. In Ron's words "My responsibility to the couple is to find what kind of service they want and to help it happen." For more information on Ron click HERE to go to Ron's web page

.......Also, Ric’s daughter, is a fine candid photographer and if there is no wedding party involved, Jerri, for a fee, will act as witness and also photograph the proceedings. To see her work click HERE
