| ..BILLIE BARBARA MASTEN, mountain woman, wood carver and poet/performer, lives on the apron of the coastal mountains in Big Sur, California. She wrote Owning the Beast and the Bad Girl, when she began to acknowledge her dark side. She has also published Billie Beethoven and His & Hers: A Voyage Through the Middle-Age Crazies, the latter co-authored with poet Ric Masten, her husband of forty-six years. Her work is also included in the award winning anthology I Am Becoming the Woman I've Wanted, by Papier-Mâché Press. Now a crone, she leads ceremonies to celebrate being an elder. .......During her in-person presentations, Billie Barbara Masten weaves her spell with words and woodcarving that are basic and real. Illustrating her fiercely, personal poetry with crafted images, her totems speak to the human psyche in a magical way. In her program she shares both her earlier verse, all guts and woman-little girl bravado, and her more recent pieces, polished, thoughtful and reflective. "With my words and wood sculpture," she says, "I am simply going about the business of trying to help people remember what they already know." |
