HIS & HERS: a voyage through the Middle Age Crazies

3 - the Relationship------------------------------------------
HIS... A SMALL QUIET WAR

over the years my wife and I
have discovered two things
a man and a woman
should avoid doing together
that is
if they value their relationship
laying rugs and carrying mattresses
and she's at it again
my wife
under the house digging

I can hear her down there
with my old rusty tools
picking and shoveling away
hollowing out a place
for her imagination to run wild in

she's been at it off and on now
for two years
running back and forth
with one shovelful of dirt at a time
throwing it into the yard
doing it the hard way
and I must admit
I'm always a bit surprised and annoyed
when I see the size of the pile
she is making
but it's her project and she says
I'm not and don't have to be involved

still and all
it has now become impossible
for me to lie here comfortably
listening to the ball game

HERS... LITTLE BIT

Mama could cut a chocolate
Into pieces enough for us
And the starving Chinese
So
I naturally thought
Everyone should share.
"Let me use your deodorant,
Some toothpaste,
A taste of your cheesecake please."

Sent away to boarding school
He hid the goodies
his grandmother sent
From his roommates he learned
Not to share
Back home his mom
Gave him a whole Hershey
So naturally
He thought
Everyone should
Have one of their own

Whether this is female -- male,
A parental tape, socio-economics
Or an old marriage game,
who knows?

But in a bar
When he asks,
"Do you want a beer?"
And I say,
"No, but I'll have a little bit of yours."
I know I go to far
