7 - the Relationship------------------------------------------
| HIS... PETER PAN SYNDROME |
Michael the jeans no longer fit
I have taken to wearing trousers
this, while you run with a crowd
younger than our children
having food fights
Diet Pepsi and aerobics...
belly flat as a plank of walnut
reminding me of a time
when I myself tried to beat the devil
winding up "with an old man's head
on a young man's body"
she laughingly said
and yet here you are
armed with a sympathetic ex-wife
racing a Mercedes through
the smoking ruins
of gutted love affairs
thriving on pain like an adolescent...
able to rake the most
amazing poetry
from off the floor of this furnace
and Michael except
for the dark howl of your eyes
I am envious of everything
but recently I have lost the desire
to drive around with the top down
or fry on a towel poolside
the dancing fool is no more
I pay for my mistakes
with Alka-Seltzer
this evening over dinner
I'll interpret our encounter for my wife
and like an accomplished jazz musician
improvise around the part
where in the sack later
I will be the one with the headache
however...
first thing tomorrow morning
I plan to visit a medical facility
and buttonhole a doctor
requesting... no... demanding
that he find something wrong with me |

Isn't it wonderful?
He let you do it.
Aren't you lucky?
He allowed you to do it.
I burned,
But I didn't call her on it.
I'd been there
I'd let him
Let me
for years
and years
and years |
